Intro to the Fashion Diaries of the Decades

Fashion is an existence that we deal with every day of our lives. It’s a means of self-expression to allow individuals to take on the desired image they wish to portray from their chosen fashion garments.

However, what is it that influences consumers decision on fashion?

Today in the 21st century, social media is the most used form of communication between fashion labels and their desired target markets. An astonishing 91% of retail brands use two or more social media channels to promote their products ( Morrison,2015). Fashion is a visual based industry and with the ever increasing influence of social media, a simple glance at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even Snapchat can result in many of us thinking that even with a wardrobe full of clothes we have 'nothing to wear'.

Personally, when I consider new fashion trends I rarely ever look at, or even purchase a fashion magazine. Instead, I gather inspiration from my several social media accounts. Most internet users have on average five different social media accounts  (Mander,2015), and with this ability to reach customers far and wide at the press of a button (or touch screen for that matter) it’s a no brainer that social media is the most influential platform for the hottest look. Yet with social media as a consistent part of our day in the 21st century and a heavy influencer of our fashion choices, without it how would we be influenced?

This blog will look into fashion trends from the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and early noughties and find out what or who was the main influence on fashion, with help from my family and friends who grew up as young adults in each of these era's, where the phrase 'social media' had no meaning. It will be interesting to discover what influenced an individual's fashion decisions (especially low rise jeans and tight perms) throughout the past several decades.

Hope you enjoy xoxo
